Vermont First Responder

The Vermont Emergency First Responder course prepares students to provide basic emergency medical care until higher-level EMS arrives. Training includes CPR/AED, bleeding control, medical and trauma emergencies, naloxone, basic patient assessment, and EMS operations. It’s a good entry-level course for firefighters, public safety personnel, and anyone looking to begin working in EMS.

Program overview

The Vermont Emergency First Responder (VEFR) course is an entry-level EMS program designed to prepare students to provide immediate, lifesaving care while awaiting the arrival of higher-level EMS personnel. VEFRs function as part of Vermont’s emergency medical services system under medical oversight and are trained to recognize emergencies, begin basic treatment, support responding EMS crews, and assist with patient care.

Course content follows the Vermont EMS VEFR curriculum and includes preparatory topics, EMS operations, medical emergencies, and trauma emergencies. The VEFR scope is based in part on American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid CPR/AED or comparable training and includes skills such as bleeding control, basic cardiac arrest management, naloxone administration, and assistance with prescribed inhalers and epinephrine auto-injectors.

Students are also expected to complete required incident-management and safety components, including ICS-100, FEMA IS-700, and hazardous materials awareness training, either as prerequisites, co-requisites, or as part of the course.

Upon successful completion, students may qualify for Vermont Emergency First Responder certification. VEFR is a Vermont certification pathway and does not require a National Registry examination.

This course is ideal for individuals seeking an introduction to EMS, firefighters, public safety personnel, community responders, and others who may arrive before an ambulance and need the skills to begin lifesaving care.
